Sleep medicine is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders.

Sleep disorders can encompass a wide range of conditions that affect a person's ability to sleep well on a regular basis. These disorders can have various causes, including medical, psychological, and lifestyle factors.

Sleep medicine specialists may use various diagnostic tools, including sleep studies (polysomnography), actigraphy, and other tests to assess and diagnose sleep disorders. Treatment options vary depending on the specific disorder but may include lifestyle modifications, behavioral therapy, medication, or the use of devices such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines for sleep apnea.

Common Sleep Disorders

Insomnia
Difficulties in initiating or maintaining sleep. People with insomnia often have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. As a result, they may experience daytime fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and impaired functioning.
Sleep Apnea
Repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions, called apneas, can occur when the upper airway becomes partially or completely blocked, leading to a temporary pause in breathing. These pauses can last for a few seconds to minutes and may occur multiple times throughout the night.
Narcolepsy
A chronic neurological disorder characterized by disturbances in the normal sleep-wake cycle. Individuals with narcolepsy often experience excessive daytime sleepiness and may have sudden, uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep during the day. These episodes can occur at inappropriate times, such as during work, while eating, or even while driving.
Circadian rhythm disorders
A group of sleep disorders that involve disruptions in the normal timing of sleep-wake cycles. The circadian rhythm is the body’s internal clock that regulates various physiological processes, including the sleep-wake cycle. When these rhythms are disrupted, it can lead to difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing excessive sleepiness at inappropriate times.
Parasomnias
Abnormal behaviors, movements, emotions, perceptions, or dreams that occur during sleep or during the transition between wakefulness and sleep. These episodes can range from mild and infrequent to more severe and disruptive. Parasomnias can occur in various sleep stages, including non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

  • Incredible service and they have gone out of their way to make sure I have everything I need and continue to do so. Even when I moved to Vancouver Island, I still use PureFlow in Pickering and they send me all my supplies every 6 months, no questions asked. I would recommend them to anyone and everyone!

  • I've had dealings with about a dozen CPAP clinics over the years and this is by far the best one. The customer service is simply on another level. These guys truly take care of you. What I love the best about this place is that instead of pushing for you to buy the most expensive product, they suggest a product that's truly the best fit for your unique needs. They are not in the profit-maximizing business, they are there to help you and care for your needs.

  • Just perfect service! The clinic is very modern, it is very pleasant to be there. Plenty of free parking. The first visit lasted as much as an hour and a half. The technician was patiently selecting masks for me (not a simple task since they have a wide choice of excellent masks). He also explained in detail how to use the device. In the first days of my new life without drowsiness, the technician called me every morning and we discussed current affairs. If I had a problem or a question, I sent him an email and he always called back. In short, I highly recommend these guys!

  • I choose to go to PureFlow Healthcare just because of the positive reviews I have read here on Google vs the reviews of other CPAP clinics in the relative area. I have to say that I was not disappointed. It takes about 90 minutes to go over everything on the first time, so a Saturday time slot is great when the alternate is taking time off work. I met with Uri and he explained everything to me clearly. He knows his stuff -- as the owner should -- but he was more than just "selling" me on CPAP, he made sure things would be good for me to use and that I would be comfortable with things. After using the machine for a week, I had questions about the mask and called back. I made an appointment to go back in to see about another mask type and try that out so I can have the mask that would work the best for me. Overall, PureFlow really cares and they are not there to pressure you into a CPAP machine or this accessory over another. I am happy to have found this place.
